Call for Editorial Board members for The Sociologist  

We are seeking additional volunteers for a two-year commitment (beginning September 2026) on the editorial board of The Sociologist: Sociology From and About the DMV – a publication of DCSS.

The Sociologist (TS) comes out three times a year: Fall/October, Winter/February, Spring/May. We publish five types of works: Features, Interviews, Advocacy/Activism, Reviews and Photo essays. All of these are described more fully below and on our TS page on the DCSS website.

The board meets (virtually) on a quarterly basis – September, December, March and June – to finalize the current issue and plan the next issue. Board members support the editor, Gay Young, with strategies and ideas for soliciting and/or developing work in specific categories to be published in The Sociologist. For example, editorial board member Jill Brantley has worked with the editor in soliciting features; and board member Alexandra Rodriguez has worked with the editor in developing photo essays.

The expectations for works in each category include:

• Interviews engage a sociologist about their sociological analysis of issues relevant to the DMV in about 2,000 words.   
• Features present theoretically and empirically driven critical thinking about the social world in about 2,500 words, and suggest additional readings. 
• Advocacy/Activism analyses identify current social issue(s), their effects, and sociologically grounded strategies for remediation in about 1,500 words. 
• Reviews cast a sociological eye on a recent book (or other cultural production) and address a question about the work in about 1,500 words. 
• Photo essays elaborate a pertinent sociological theme in about 1,000 words, along with about five relevant images with descriptive captions.
