"Since its founding more than 20 years ago, the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) has welcomed more than 3,000 graduate students and junior faculty.

"Participants in IQMR are nominated by their home school or department, or selected from an 'open pool.'

"The two-week institute trains participants to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs; explores the techniques, uses, strengths and limitations of qualitative methods, and emphasizes their relationships with alternative approaches. Participants also receive constructive feedback on their own research designs."

IQMR 2026 will run from June 14-26

Open Pool: There are four separate open-pool competitions to attend IQMR 2026: the general open pool; an open pool for researchers at African scholarly institutions; an open pool for researchers at Latin American scholarly institutions; and an open pool for scholars based at scholarly institutions in the Arab MENA region. Scholars admitted through the African, Latin American and MENA open-pool competitions will have participation at IQMR covered, will receive a stipend for meals, and will have lodging covered for the duration of the institute, as well as roundtrip economy-class airfare.

Nomination: In addition to receiving applications through the open-pool process, IQMR also accepts participants who are nominated to attend by their home unit (center/department/school) using their own selection procedures. Nominations will open in early January and are due by Feb. 28, 2026. Sponsoring institutions pay a fee for attendees.
