Using the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) to study Americans’ social lives: opportunities and limitations

Friday, Oct 16, 2026 - 12:00 - 1:30PM
Online Webinar via Zoom

"The ATUS, being the primary source of information on how Americans allocate their time, is a crucial source of data for studying the health of Americans’ social lives. In this webinar, I discuss the ATUS’s time diary methodology, review the various ways the ATUS has been used to study Americans’ sociality, and highlight what this research tells us. I then demonstrate how researchers can get started using the ATUS via IPUMS’s extract builder (www.atusdata.org/atus/) while highlighting the ATUS’s limitations for studying time spent with others and time spent alone.

"About the Speaker: R. Gordon Rinderknecht is the Resident Fellow of the German Marshall Fund and Affiliate Researcher of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research."
