"In early 2025, we warned that changes to federal budget policies would reduce critical resources for families already struggling to make ends meet. With the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, we knew that beginning in the summer of 2026, many of our neighbors could lose access to essential food assistance. "August marks the first month that many Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) are seeing their SNAP benefits cut off. At Bread for the City, 97% of our food pantry clients qualify for and receive SNAP benefits, making these changes especially significant for the people we serve.
