Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment

Tuesday, March 31, 2026 | 12:00pm EDT | ACMCU Boardroom (ICC 270)

The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding is hosting Dr. Ahmet Kuru, San Diego State University, for a talk titled “Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment” on Tuesday, March 31 at noon in the ACMCU Boardroom (ICC 270).

"Many Muslim-majority countries have faced problems of authoritarianism and underdevelopment. Ahmet Kuru examines these problems through his award-winning book Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison. He challenges explanations that attribute these problems to Islam by showing how Muslim societies experienced a golden age of philosophy and economic development between the eighth and eleventh centuries. Kuru also argues that simply blaming Western colonialism is misleading. Instead, he explains how the long-standing alliance between religious and political authorities, the ulema-state alliance, has marginalized economic entrepreneurs and intellectuals, thereby hindering democracy and development in the Muslim world."

Ahmet T. Kuru is the director of Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies and a professor of Political Science at San Diego State University.
