Teaching During Major Elections

  • August 21, 2024
  • 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
  • Virtual

On Wednesday, August, 21st (12:00 - 1:30pm ET) First Publics, an online community dedicated to the politics and practice of teaching sociology as public sociology, will host a conversation with Edwin Ackerman (Syracuse University), Ben Bradlow (Princeton University), Cedric De Leon (University of Massachusetts Amherst), and Johnnie Lotesta (Appalachian State) on teaching politics and making the classroom a space for political engagement.

Panelists will address how they bring a comparative and historical perspective on politics into the classroom; the issues that drive student participation and disengagement; pedagogical strategies for fostering political engagement among students; as well as the challenges and institutional constraints instructors of sociology face when teaching politics today.

The conversation will be moderated by Diana Graizbord (University of Georgia).
