Many U.S. states have developed Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) that house and link administrative education records from pre-K through postsecondary education. These systems have been used extensively for large-scale quantitative education research on many topics. This talk will provide an overview of one such SLDS—the Michigan Education Data Center (MEDC). MEDC is a unique partnership that contains a wealth of information describing public education for all students in the State of Michigan. The webinar will describe how MEDC makes these data available to approved researchers, describe the data included in MEDC and their potential uses, and lay out the process for gaining access. It will also illustrate the type of research that is possible with the data by describing two recent studies in detail. Presenters: Kevin Stange - Professor of Public Policy and co-director of the Education Policy Initiative, University of Michigan Kyle Kwaiser - Senior Data Architect, Michigan Education Data Center
